Key Points
- Optimizing nutrition is a safe and viable way to avoid treat or lessen mental illness Poor nutrition is a significant and modifiable risk factor for the development of mental illness.
- 2013 new Zealand health survey mental illness in children n 5 yrs ADHD increase 3 fold internationally, 20 fold increase in autism and a 40 fold increase in Biopolar disease in children.
- The western world follows the Medical model – medicine first and therapies second.
- These drugs are shown to be effective in short time but in long term they have the opposite effect in some cases. Rates increasing not decreasing.
- We are no better off these 50 years later with the drugs eg Ritolin for ADHD than without.
- 2 decades ago - Families treating themselves with nutrients in Canada with conditions such as bipolar, psychosis and depression - data showing them getting well and staying well.
- Micronutrients in adults in adhd in adults – improved greatly compared to placebo group.
- Studies show fish oils nutrients reduce the chance of developing mental health conditions in susceptible children.

Human beings evolved on a diet with a ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 essential fatty acids of :1 whereas in Western diets the ration is 15:1 – 16.7:1…… promotes the pathogenesis (the manner of development of a disease) of many diseases, including cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) disease, cancer and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases….. where as increased levels of omega 3 exert a suppressive effect.
